I started painting at a very early age. My mother's father, Arthur Golightly, was an artist and let me paint along with him during the summers I spent with him and my grandmother in the Texas Hill Country. He signed his paintings, "Golightly", so I did also. Today, I still sign my paintings, "J. Golightly" to honor him and to thank him for giving me one of the greatest joys of my life.

To capture the breathtakingly beautiful light and colorful shadows in a landscape is pure bliss. Landscapes, both far and near are a joy to paint - New Mexico Mountains, Hill Country pastures and streams, coastal shores and boats and the French Countryside. But, most of all, I love to paint in my own back yard. The gardens and the pond with a spring-fed stream, koi fish and water lilies offer constant inspiration.

The same thrill is true of still life painting on the back deck or in the studio. I arrange a collection of objects that have a strong sensory and sensual appeal to me. I love to capture the luminous and mysterious quality of handmade vessels and ancient objects. I feel that there is a lovely spiritual relationship between nature and these objects.

I very much agree with Jeff Legg, an artist whose work I admire. "Truth is the essential ingredient in making art. The human soul is hopelessly bound to express it."
